#silmarillion #music #tolkien
I hope you're all doing well today. Please enjoy this video which musically depicts part of the opening chapter in J.R.R. Tolkien's great book, **The Silmarillion**. This opening chapter is called 'Ainulindalë'.
For those unfamiliar with this work of literature, the events in the book take place centuries before **The Hobbit** or the **Lord of the Rings** trilogy. While the writing is a little old-fashioned, the tales told here are seen as in-universe lore. I have taken the liberty of creating music out of the first chapter in this book, which I will elaborate on.
#Eru #Illuvatar (the God of the universe) is the single creator, who inspires lesser gods (called the #Ainur) to create music, and he gives them a first Theme. In the book, the second most powerful being is called #Melkor, and he takes the #Music that Eru presents and twists it to his own thoughts. Illuvatar presents a second Theme, and the #Ainur are slowly twisted into Melkor's harmonies. Throughout, we hear the two Themes sometimes presented together and with new harmonies in counterpoint resembling #Bach. A third Theme is presented after Melkor has meddled too much; the Ainur still don't know who to follow, as the original themes are twisted. After Melkor presents trumpets with little variation or harmony, Illuvatar ends Melkor's Discord in one giant chord.
I was inspired to create this music in #Baroque fashion. The score is not exact but merely presents the flow of the music, and gives the general direction.
If you would like to listen for better context, there is a narrated version of this book. This excerpt can be found from 1:25 to 8:30. [ Ссылка ]
