This was a joint event organised with the Cambridge University International Development Society. It is about taking a look at international development from a critical perspective, and to explore the ways in which we can move away from neo-colonial development practice and take a more sustainable and respectful approach to international development.
Our guests were:
Dr Sian Lazar, a professor of anthropology here at the university and coordinator of the 'Anthropology and Development' paper, is our key note speaker. She will be deconstructing the idea of development and reimagining what 'development' and other ideas like 'progress' actually mean on a global scale. She will analyse the biases and assumptions these terms contain and how typical models of development have historically sought to construct the world in the image of the West and how this is in turn problematic to future development projects and the relations between the Global North and South.
Dr. Hazel Gray is a Lecturer in African Studies and Development at the University of Edinburgh. Her research interests include the political economy of development in Africa, industrial policy and industrialisation, state-business relations, and institutions and economic performance. Gray will discuss her critique of the uses of colonialism and violence in economic approaches to understanding development, drawing examples from Douglass North, and Acemoglu and Robinson et al.
Professor Cheryl McEwan is from the Department of Geography at Durham University. Her main research interests include ethical consumption in the global South, the geographies of transformation in South Africa, and the role of postcolonial theory and decolonial politics in shaping responses to global challenges. She is author of Postcolonialism and Development (2009) and co-editor of Postcolonial Geographies (2002).
This lecture was recorded on 26/10/2018, at Mill Lane Lecture Rooms, University of Cambridge.
