The big question is: how long can this system keep working? The short answer is that it'll last until it doesn't. Nobody can really say when; what we do know is that it won't last forever. The next question is: what happens when it finally stops working? History gives us some clues: Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK all used global reserve currencies to power their empires, and when those currencies lost their dominance, their economies took a hit for a while. Of course, they didn't have thirty trillion in the Global Reserve, so it might be more severe in the U.S. While we can't stop the inevitable, we can prepare for it. When the time comes, our entire system must adapt to fit the realities of a new global order, and if we have made plans, that transition will be far smoother.
