Short lecture on exceptions to atomic electron configuration rules.
Transition metals with d4 and d9 configurations prefer to instead promote an electron from the s block to make their valence shell consist of half-full and/or full subshells. This includes chromium, copper, molybdenum, and silver. Also of interest are transition metal cations, which lose their s electrons prior to their d electrons.
