The session will present the efforts being made by the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) to bring the best available science together in the context of peatland mapping and assessment. The Global Peatlands Assessment (GPA) currently underway will be presented as a collaborative effort to assess the state of the world’s peatlands showing where peatlands are, their values, the threats they are facing and cases of success of their wise use and management. Also, the Global Peatland Map 2.0 will be launched to improve the knowledge base on the location and extent of peatlands worldwide. The session will elaborate on the need of high-resolution peatland data to prevent their drainage and degradation and thus, tackle societal challenges including climate change mitigation and adaptation.
