This is a survival technique used by ant colonies when they are threatened. When environmental conditions become extreme, especially during floods, each ant will grip the legs of another ant with its jaws, creating a tight and waterproof network.
This ball-like structure allows them to float on the water’s surface for days, even weeks, until they find land or the water recedes.
Red fire ants, in particular, do not only rely on each other in this formation but also protect their queen and larvae by placing them in the center of the ball, where they are safest from water and predators.
