CANSEE 2013 - Jon D. Erickson - The Dogma of Ecological Economics
Canadian Society for Ecological Economics
2013 Conference at York University, Faculty of Environmental Studies
Toronto, Ontario on Saturday, November 2, 2013
Keywords: Economics for the Anthropocene, degrowth, new economics, ecological economics, neoclassical economics
Ecological economics has the great potential to frame the study of the economy within the realities of contemporary science, and contribute to real solutions to the biophysical and social crises that define the Anthroposcene. However, instead, The field has developed more recently as an application of outdated economic principles to poorly defined environmental and social problems. While fields within the social sciences such as psychology and anthropology are undergoing radical change and alignment with the sciences, ecological economics seems to be tied to an economic worldview and a form of pluralism that is hopelessly mired in dogmatic beliefs inconsistent with fact. The field no longer has the luxury of being all things to everybody.
