이탈리아, G20 정상회의장 주변 경비 강화.. 저격수도 배치
Security is being tightened in Rome ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit.
Thousands of police officers and hundreds of soldiers are deployed around the venue as well as the hotel where the leaders will be staying.
Participants are expected to touch on various transnational issues including climate change and the pandemic.
Kim Ji-yeon provides a glimpse of what to expect.
Trained dogs sniff out a potential threat... while local police make checks around the Convention Centre "La Nuvola" in Rome... the venue for the G20 Leaders' Summit taking place this Saturday and Sunday.
The Italian government says the summit will take place under "maximum security" with a "red zone" around the Nuvola and media center at the nearby Palazzo dei Congressi.
Up to six-thousand police officers... along with around 500 soldiers are to be deployed during the meeting... of leaders of the top richest countries.
"In particular, for this G-20 we are deploying maximum numbers of policemen as a preventive measure. The main task of first responder teams, like other units deployed for occasions like this, is to emphasize the greatest possible presence on the ground".
Multiple road closures are expected starting Friday... with police snipers strategically stationed on the venue's rooftops.
Rome's airspace will be monitored by the army... while special corps will be on standby to take action in case of serious security threats with a system to intercept hostile drones.
A police unit will monitor Telegram chat groups and websites for possible attempts to organize violent demonstrations in the Italian capital.
Also, there's heightened security around the Hotel Rome Cavalieri A Waldorf Astroia... where the majority of the leaders are staying during the two-day event.
G20 leaders are expected to discuss ways to cooperate on various transnational issues including climate change, COVID-19 and post pandemic global recovery.
The G20, whose countries account for 80-percent of global carbon emissions, is considered an important stepping stone before the United Nations COP26 climate summit next week in Scotland.
