KETRACO is implementing regional power interconnectors that will facilitate power trade between countries within the East African region. One such project is the Ethiopia-Kenya Interconnector also known as the Eastern Electricity Highway Project (EEHP) which is undergoing commissioning tests.
The Interconnector is a +/- 500kV Bipolar High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Line. The scope of work is a 1047km transmission line and Convertor station with a capacity of 2000MW. The Line runs from Woloyta/ Sodo in Ethiopia to Suswa Substation in Kenya. The Kenyan part of the transmission line is approximately 641km and is divided into lots.
The project supports the integration of power systems of five countries with a combined population of over 200 million. Within the framework of the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP), the Program has three phases for connecting the power grids of Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. The EAPP’s Master Plan, endorsed by the governments of the EAPP member countries, has designated the transmission interconnections among these countries as priorities for the development of the Eastern Africa power market. These interconnections will create the transmission backbone for the region.
The project is financed by the Government of Kenya, African Development Bank (AfDB), World Bank, and Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The Contractors are Siemens/Isolux, KEC International of India, Larsen, and Toubro of India, and Kalpataru Power Transmission of India.
