We know COVID-19 variants exist. It’s an expected occurrence during replication of an RNA virus.
While some of the variants have demonstrated easier transmission or increased disease, it’s reassuring that we are still seeing protection from some of the more common variants. For example the B117 variant from the UK.
We know there are other variants in circulation but don’t have enough real world data to know how effective our current vaccines are against some of these strains.
We need to keep in mind that vaccine immunity is not an all or nothing phenomenon, and sometimes partial protection may be enough to reduce transmission or complications.
It’s still important that we maintain surveillance and identify strains via sequencing so we can stay ahead of the virus.
