Australian National University’s Professor Peter Collignon says even if the federal government’s assumption of a COVID-19 vaccine in 2021 happens, it will not mean life goes back to normal.
“Realistically, even if everything goes according to plan and we get something that’s really effective, it won’t be towards the second half of next year at the earliest that we’ll have a large proportion of the nation vaccinated,” Professor Collignon told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“To really work at stopping restrictions it’s got to be ninety per cent effective because if you look at the only two respiratory viruses that we’ve stopped spread and eliminated … that didn’t happen until we had basically a vaccine that was ninety per cent effective or more.”
“I think we will get a vaccine that will save lives, but it won’t stop the need for some restriction of our movement and crowding, and some interference with our lives,” he said.
