In this program, three spine professionals from UW Medicine present different perspectives on improving the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with disc degeneration. Jeffrey Jarvik, MD, MPH, UW Professor of Radiology and Neurological Surgery, opens the program with an appeal to those involved in spinal care to adopt standardized nomenclature for disc pathology so that specialists can create and interpret data in the same way. Michael Lee, MD, UW Professor in the Departments of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and Neurological Surgery, follows with a discussion of the controversies surrounding discogenic pain and the use of discograms to diagnose pain. Dr. Lee argues that discograms are too invasive and too subjective and that new diagnostic tools need to be considered. Finally, Christopher J. Standaert, MD, a UW Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, argues that the treatment of psychosocial conditions associated with low back pain are of equal, if not greater importance than the operative or non-operative procedures used in treating a degenerative disc condition. Treatment programs should be personalized to help empower the patient.
