God first created the 10 Sefirot – the 10 qualities of the Creator's light that it dresses in when it traverses the spiritual worlds in order to bestow upon our desires.
Let’s get to understand these 10 Sefirot.
What are they? How can a desire become a Sefira? What is the structure of the spiritual vessel? What is the difference between physical and spiritual perception?
How the 10 Sefirot are usually depicted through a diagram is simply a presentation, but the Sefirot are not any kind of physical objects. The ten Sefirot are the structure of the spiritual vessel. Through this structure, we perceive the spiritual reality.
In this physical world, we have a body with the five physical senses. We perceive this whole earthly reality through five senses in our body.
Similarly, we can develop a non-material device, senses that can perceive the non-material existence. As Kabbalists found, the structure of such a device is made up of ten Sefirot.
We can call this spiritual vessel the soul, the structure of the spiritual sense. It is non-material and has nothing to do with any object or physical being.
In spiritual reality or perception, there is no separation between us and what we perceive. There is clarity that all of reality is one entity. So when we talk about the spiritual vessel being ten Sefirot, all of reality being a single system, we are talking about the same thing.
This is something different to get used to. In our world, we are used to a different experience as in our physical perception, we feel the flesh and blood body, and all our consciousness is glued to this experience. We feel that this body is separate from the environment and our surroundings. There is us and there is the world. There is us and there is reality including billions of other human beings.
In spirituality, we come to sense the whole reality as part of ourselves. We begin to identify everything existing on all levels of natural reality, and whatever exists in the spiritual realm are all layers within us. They are all layers of different qualities of one existence. We and reality are one and the same.
Thus, when we talk about the structure of the ten Sefirot, we are talking about the structure of the spiritual vessel, but kabbalists use the same “ten Sefirot” to describe spiritual worlds as they are synonymous. How we view them is just a matter of perspective, depending on whether we talk from the perspective of one who attains reality or we talk about what is attained by that attaining observer.
The word “Sefira” comes from the word “luminous” which describes a luminous quality, something that shines. Sefira means a desire, a layer, a portion, an aspect of desire that went through some process that we call spiritual correction, or reaching equivalence of form, which process made that desire shine with light. So we refer to it as a Sefira, meaning it became luminous.
These desires that became Sefirot constitute each and every level and layer of reality.
