Metro Manila is one of the world's largest urban areas with 22 million inhabitants. The city sits above a dangerous seismic fault. In the event of an earthquake, about 50% of the population will lose connection, will not receive critical information, and will not be able to contact their loved ones.
On June 22, 2016, the Metro Manila Development Authority spearheaded one of the world's largest disaster preparedness initiatives. The #MMShakeDrill involved millions of people across Metro Manila. During the "Shake Drill", the MMDA used FireChat Alerts to send alert messages to people who did not have access to the Internet or cellular networks.
Thanks to FireChat's peer-to-peer communications technology it is now possible to reach more people in times of emergency.
