In June 2022, the WHO declared Monkeypox a world health emergency with increased case numbers showing up in several countries including the USA. With some states such California, Illinois and New York declaring a state of emergency over the disease. As Monkeypox cases are rising, it is good to know the common monkeypox symptoms including how monkeypox affects the eyes.

I have heard several news sources talk about how monkeypox can cause blindness. But CAN monkeypox cause blindness? In this video we review how monkeypox affects the eyes and what you need to know if you or a loved one gets monkeypox.

Can monkeypox cause blindness? In this video we review how monkeypox affects the eyes and what you need to know if you or a loved one gets monkeypox. At this time, the published literature reports that about 20-25% of monkeypox cases may present with conjunctivitis (pink eye). While pink eye from monkeypox is a possibility, thankfully it is often limited and may not require extensive treatment. Either way, if you are developing monkeypox eyelid blisters or any other signs of monkeypox conjunctivitis, best to consult a local eye care professional.
