Saturday is International Press Freedom Day, but some countries are cracking down on online expression.
"There has been an improvement on access to the Internet," Melody Patry, a senior advocacy officer at the Index on Censorship, told Al Jazeera. "But the crackdown on social media, for example, has been very severe in India and in Brazil."
Patry said bloggers and users of Twitter have been sent to jail or have faced prosecution in many countries.
