The Gelmerbahn funicular in Bern, Switzerland, was the steepest in Europe until the opening of the Stoosbahn in Schwyz last year. It takes tourists 6,000 feet above sea level to or from the Gelmersee Lake, and while the journey might be slow, it's not for the faint-hearted.
