Interview with Clara Sicard, undergraduate student in UCL Biological Sciences - about the course.
UCL’s BSc Biological Sciences is one of the oldest degrees of its type and the origins of our biological sciences research and study can be traced back to 1826. Our staff have included 9 Nobel Prize Winners, including 2014 winner and current staff member John O’Keefe.
Our extensive experience has allowed us to develop a uniquely balanced programme that ensures our students are able to study in some of the most exciting areas and organisations in this critical field as well as developing exceptional foundational scientific skills.
Biological Sciences is the centre of UCL’s world leading research on biodiversity and environmental science as well as human genetics, healthy ageing and many more. Many current research experts from UCL and our partner institutes are actively involved in the teaching of the BSc and MSci in Biological Sciences.
Flexible programme structure provides all students with a sound foundation in year one across a range of scientific subjects. This better informs students to choose an area in which to specialise or they are able to convert to an MSci degree. This is a unique opportunity to tailor your studies without losing focus from the main foundation of science
From year two, students are able to specialise in one of seven areas including high growth fields such as biodiversity and conservation biology and computational biology.
First University in the UK to offer a degree in the area computational biology
All students (BSc and MSci) have the opportunity to do a research project with a single supervisor in a real lab and asking a real question.
Our partnerships with the Natural History Museum, the Crick and the ZSL London Zoo mean that not only will students to be able to attend lectures from some of the experts from these institutions, there may also be an opportunity to undertake research projects in their facilities.
All students are able to join our popular Biological Society. The society runs talks, freshers week activities, an end of year ball and a student and staff retreat each year.
