Orange County psychologist and marriage counselor, Dr, Susan Pazak PhD answers your sex and relationship questions on "Ask an Expert."
Q: Dear Dr. Susan, I'm a regular drinker and my wife is on me all the time to stop, but I've got a good job, my bills are all paid, why can't she just let me enjoy the fruits of my labor?
Usually when a wife asks her husband to stop doing something, it is because the behavior is affecting her negatively. Although you may not see the negative impact drinking may be having on your life as it is not impairing your ability to function at work or financially, however maybe the drinking is impairing your ability to function in the marriage. Give your wife an opportunity to express why she would like you to stop drinking and try to listen with an open mind and respect what she is communicating. Usually there is a valid reason to request someone to stop drinking if not, then the situation will need to be addressed so that both of you are heard. When we have this type of disagreement in a marriage professional assistance will be valuable in finding a resolution and compromise.
