The town of Bir Zeit is renowned on the West Bank for its old Ottoman era town centre and student atmosphere owing to Bir Zeit university. It is also home to the recently opened monumental National Museum of Palestine. Yet, what it did not have, was a route linking Bir Zeit’s historical and modern places. Until now. The Bir Zeit Heritage Path allows visitors to walk alongside the towns rolling green hills and explore its old quarters and its new.
The path was developed by the municipality of Bir Zeit with support from VNG International as part of the Local Government Capacity Programme. The project is one of of Bir Zeit’s efforts to stimulate economic growth in the community through tourism.
Bir Zeit is part of a group of 13 Palestinian municipalities that VNG International assists in identifying local economic development opportunities. The assistance also entails setting up successful economic projects of which the Bir Zeit Heritage Path is a proud example.
