Jane Eyre wipes away all history and is left with nothing after running away from Mr. Rochester. Once rescued from hopeless poverty and starvation, she continues hiding behind a mask of anonymity. This protects her from what she assumes would be negative reactions if her true identity would be discovered. However, it is a thin disguise and comes close to ruining her future twice. She isn't the only one hiding a past to create a new person.
