Once the largest woodpecker in the U.S., the Ivory-billed Woodpecker depended on the old-growth forests of the Southeast. But unregulated logging wiped out most of its habitat by the early 20th century. A hopeful rediscovery in 1935 ended in tragedy when logging companies refused to protect its last refuge. The final confirmed sighting was in 1944, though some still hold out hope that this iconic bird may survive in hidden corners of its historic range.
