Busy dawn chorus in the savannas of Niokolo-Koba national park, Eastern Senegal. In 2017 I spent 3 weeks exploring the remotest and wildest parts of Senegal in search for pristine nature and untainted soundscapes. One of the places that made a lasting impression on me is Niokolo-Koba national park on the banks of the river Gambia. This is a truly wild place where you can go for many hours without hearing man-made sound like distant traffic or aircraft.
Listen to the monotonous but hypnotic chorus of Vinaceous doves and Red-billed hornbills, accompanied by a multitude of insect chirps. Bulbuls, bush-shrikes, wood-hoopoes, doves and many other species complement the avian symphony. If you listen closely you will also hear distant baboons squabbling as the sun rises and they don't feel like waking up just yet. Geese, ducks and ibises occasionally offer a less than harmonious alternate to the birdsong.
