John Robert Parker Ravenscroft
Born: 30th August 1939 Liverpool.
Died: 25th October 2004 Peru
John Peel – Former BBC Radio DJ, radio presenter, and journalist. He was the longest serving of the original BBC radio 1 DJ’s, broadcasting regularly between 1967 until his death in 2004.
He promoted and celebrated the country’s best talent and is regarded as one of the Uk’s music industries' most influential figures.
An entire wing at BBC’s Broadcasting house is named after him.
He started his career in America in 1964.
His first radio slot in Britain was on a pirate radio station broadcasting from a converted minesweeper in the North
sea the station was called Wonderful Radio. When that was shut down, he was hired by the BBC.
Locations of note in Suffolk.
John Peel Centre for creative Arts – Church Walk, Stowmarket. It is an arts centre, live music venue and theatre.
The family have been hands on with the planning and development of this building.
Family home: Thatched cottage in village of Great Finborough, Suffolk called Peel Acres. In the later years, he would often broadcast from a studio in the house.
Died of a heart attack. His funeral took place on 12th November 2004 in Bury St Edmunds.
