In this lesson we break down the verse groove of Karnivool's tune 'Goliath' to better understand its structure. This is a 16th note based groove that's in an odd time signature that's also changing meters between 7/4 and 6/4, and as if that wasn't enough the downbeats of 1 and 4 are generally anticipated. This makes it a great example to break down and better understand the world of "odd" meters.

Odd time signatures are commonly based on combinations of 2's and 3's. Playing a 5/4 as 3/4+2/4 flows more naturally compared to 4/4+1/4, and for that reason you'll often hear odd time signatures phrased that way. That being said, any time signature could technically be a combination of any amount of beats and groupings that combined end up mathematically correct to the time signature referred to. This specific tune is in 7/4 and utilizes a 3/4+4/4 structure.
Once we allow ourselves to think of different time signatures this way, we tend to feel slightly more comfortable as we realize that everything you know in your more common time signatures is applicable, you don't need to learn something completely different in order to play in another time signature. This is the reasoning behind me breaking this down into the separate 3/4 as well as 4/4 to then gradually increase the difficulty and finally put it all together.
This is not a beginner drum lesson nor a beginner song, so I expect you to have a decent understanding for the different things I'm covering, however if you need help with anything in any way, don't hesitate to ask or contact me!
