En Vogue kicked off the 11th Annual Soul Train Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. This performance took place on March 7, 1997, only 3 months before the release of 'EV3' and just 13 days before the 'EV3' album cover photo shoot (March 20-21, 1997). One has to wonder: at the time of this performance, was it already common knowledge within the group that Dawn had chosen to depart from En Vogue, and they simply decided to perform together one last time and have this performance serve as a farewell appearance? Or was the announcement of Dawn's departure yet to come, catching the group by surprise?
If Maxine, Cindy and Terry were already aware of Dawn's departure during the Soul Train Music Awards performance, they would have had just a few weeks to re-record the songs on EV3 that originally featured Dawn's vocals.
Also, during the announcement of the artists making an appearance, the music played includes En Vogue's "Hold On" and "You're All I Need." It's worth noting that the latter track, "You're All I Need," is the *original* recording featuring Dawn's vocals still leading the song. How about that?!
