Barcelona is one of the world's main tourist destinations, as well as Europe's cultural, financial, and transport hub. With a rich history and great location, there's a lot to explore. But what are the must-see attractions if you only have 1 day? Park Güell
• 8 AM: PARK GÜELL. Located on Carmel Hill, the park is full of gardens and architectural elements (lucky lizard or long mosaic bench shaped like a sea serpent). Designed by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, it was built from 1900 to 1914, officially opened as a public park in 1926, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• 10 AM: SAGRADA FAMÍLIA. Construction of this large Roman Catholic church began in 1882 and is still under construction. Part of the Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with six other Gaudi buildings in Barcelona.
• 12 PM (noon): Parc de la Ciutadella (Ciutadella Park). It is probably one of the greenest oases in Barcelona. This historical garden stretching over 70 acres, and features a zoo, a small lake, and an impressive fountain.
• 2 PM: BARCELONETA BEACH is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. Barcelona's old city is best known for its sandy beach that can get very busy in the summer, as well as many restaurants and nightclubs lining the boardwalk. It's also home to the five-star W Hotel, which is famous for its sail-like shape. Don't miss the nearby Rambla de Mar, a waterfront harbor which is a part of Port of Barcelona or ride a port cable car that takes you to the Mount Montjuïc.
• 4 PM: Gothic Quarter. The center of the old city includes the oldest parts of Barcelona, the remains of the Roman wall, and a labyrinth of small streets opening out into squares. The quarter is also home to various medieval landmarks that date – not back to the Middle Ages as one might expect from the name – but to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
• 5 PM: LA RAMBLA & LA BOQUERIA MARKET. La Rambla was originally a sewage-filled stream serving as an important drain for the heavy rainwater that flowed from the hills in the spring and fall. Now, thousands of tourists wander around this 4,000 feet or 1.2 km-long street every day, making it one of the major attractions in Barcelona. Located on La Boqueria is also an extensive public market dating back to 1217.
• 7 PM: MONTJUÏC. Depending how much time you have, you can explore many attractions, located in Montjuïc, such as Plaça d'Espanya, Montjuïc Castle, Olympic Park and many others. Standing below the Palau Nacional on Montjuïc Hill and close to Placa d'Espanya, the Magic Fountain was built for the 1929 International Exposition. The show was premiered on May 19, 1929, the day before the fair. However, the fountain was severely damaged in the Spanish Civil War and could not function until 1955. Music was added to the light show in the 1980s, and the fountain was fully restored before the 1992 Summer Olympics events on Montjuïc.
