Listening to the urban forestry podcast about Prarie cherry - [ Ссылка ] - sparked my interest in these. They are very hardy, grow shrublike and fruit prolifically and are relatively disease-resistant - all attractive properties for me. I picked up 4 in 2018 from the so-called Romance series: Valentine; Cupid; Carmine jewel; and Juliet. They are planted out against an East South East wall, so should be good and sunny. I haven't had any fruit yet, but, it's supposed to be quite sour but good for cooking.
I also give a quick look at a ‘Chelsea’ (syn. ‘King James’) Black Mulberry, espalier. planted 4 years ago in a root bag to control vigour, and maybe encourage fruiting. No fruit yet either
Also, three additional sweet cherries bought in 2018 and transplanted end-2020 into the final location as rootstock allowed rapid growth. These are:
Regina is on Avium (Colt rootstock probably) - very vigorous where it was in the sheltered back garden. The 2020 fruit was top class.
Oblacinska sour cherry on cerasus rootstock. It is less vigorous but sour cherries are, so unclear if rootstock or scion or both are restricting the growth
Cherry - Stella is on Avium (Colt rootstock probably) - very vigorous where it was in the sheltered back garden. The 2020 fruit was top class.
All three are sprouting in March 2021 - good news that the cherries all survived the harsh pruning and transplant. The fruit was great from the two sweet cherries - possibly due to the very sheltered spot in 2020. I hope it's just as good from the new location.
