U.S. carmaker Tesla broke ground on a factory in Shanghai on May 23 to manufacture its energy-storage batteries known as Megapacks. Mass production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2025 with an initial capacity of 10,000 Megapack units a year.
Tesla signed a deal with Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Company for the first Megapack order in China. Tesla said each Megapack unit can store over 3.9 megawatt-hours of energy, sufficient to power approximately 3,600 households for one hour.
This is Tesla's first energy storage mega factory outside of the United States and represents another large-scale investment project in China after building its Shanghai Gigafactory. Tesla chose Lingang once again due to its advantageous location.
