The Birmingham Police Department held a promotion ceremony Friday where Richard Mason, a former school resource officer who inspired multiple students to join the police force, was promoted to sergeant. Mason spent years in various Birmingham schools as an SRO. While in schools, he inspired multiple students to join the police force. Several of his mentees showed up to support Mason at the promotion ceremony. Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the group of promoted sergeants, lieutenants, and captains the future of the Birmingham Police Department and challenged them to find solutions to move the department forward. “I’m ready to go out, lead and be a positive role model for officers.” Mason said. “And, to protect and serve citizens.”
