Here is a beautiful 1948 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe in factory color Cumberland Blue over a wonderfully preserved mohair tan interior. Studebaker delivered the first new model design on April 30, 1946 as a 1947 model at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York with an incredible profile that sent the public into a buying frenzy while sending shock waves to Ford and Chevrolet designers. Iconic stylist Virgil “Ex” Exner drew this car, inspired by glassy WWII aircraft canopies. Exner is also the patent holder. Raymond Loewy got credit for this design, but it was Exner who actually styled it and even held the patent. Exner was hired by Loewy in 1939 as a contractor for Studebaker and spent 11 years there until 1949 before going to Chrysler to creat the fabulous “Forward Look” Chrysler, Desoto, Dodge, Plymouth and Imperial cars until 1962. This Studebaker Champion Regal Deluxe Starlight Coupe (Series 7G-C5) has a 112” wheelbase and features a 5 passenger design, 169 C.I. flat six engine, 3 speed transmission with hill holder and overdrive feature, AM radio, clock, heater, body and window vents, back light illumination gauges with clock, interior lights and backup light, full glovebox, and spare tire in a lighted trunk. The base price was $1442, The car is 193” long and weighs 2690 lbs. Studebaker ads claimed “First by far with a post war car!” and always delivers just a little bit more from their factory in South Bend, Indiana. This example has about 104,000 miles and has been part of a private collection in South Carolina. It is currently not for sale but will undergo a light mechanical and cosmetic refresh in the coming months.
