International broadcast journalist Zeinab Badawi, and SOAS-University of London current president, discusses her debut book An African History of Africa with journalist Paula Akpan. Together they dived into the power of Africans re-telling the diverse continent’s history and independence. In this event she signed copies of her book at The Bernie Grant Arts Centre London as part of The Tottenham Literature Festival 11-17 November 2024.
Zeinab Badawi
Zeinab Badawi was born in the Sudan; her family moved to London when she was 2 years old. She studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford University and earned a master’s degree in history (awarded with a distinction) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Badawi has worked in the British media for four decades and is best known for her work in the BBC’s international division at BBC World News TV and BBC World Service Radio.
Badawi is the president of SOAS, London University, and a board member of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS), the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Research Councild (UK), and the Royal Opera House
Paula Akpan
Paula Akpan is a Black British historian and writer who gained a distinction in her fully funded MA in Black British History and who has credits in Vogue, Teen Vogue, The Independent, Stylist, VICE, i-D, Bustle, Time Out London and more. She is a published essayist, having written an essay on Black women and community in the anthology Loud Black Girls and another on Black British lesbians in The Queer Bible.
