(3 Mar 2022) Ukrainians continued on Thursday to take refuge in makeshift bomb shelters as shelling rains down on the villages and cities above ground.
In Mykolaivka, one resident spoke of the time she has spent hiding underground from the Russian aggression.
"We've been sitting here for ten days. We were sitting in Novohnativka (another village nearby) for six days, and we've been sitting here for ten days or so," she said.
In Volnovakha on the outskirts of Mariupol, tanks marked with a white 'Z' lined up in fields firing shells onto the area nearby.
The letter 'Z' painted on military vehicles is a tactical sign intended to quickly identify military units and help troops distinguish friend from foe in the chaos of combat.
The 'Z' sign was seen on many vehicles, including ones moving in Russian territory, and believed to be used by the Russian military during its invasion of Ukraine.
Russian forces have been bombarding the country's second-biggest city, Kharkiv, and laid siege to two strategic seaports.
Meanwhile, the U.N. refugee agency said a million people have fled Ukraine since Russian forces invaded last week.
