The Acropolis
No visit to Athens is complete without seeing the Acropolis, the ancient citadel that stands on a rocky hill overlooking the city. The Acropolis is home to some of the most famous and impressive monuments of classical Greece, such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike. The best time to visit the Acropolis is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it's less crowded and hot.
Lycabettus Hill
If you want to enjoy a spectacular view of Athens and beyond, head to Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in the city. You can hike up to the top or take a funicular railway from Kolonaki. At the summit, you'll find a small whitewashed chapel dedicated to St. George, a restaurant and a café. From here, you can see the whole cityscape, including the Acropolis, the Panathenaic Stadium, the National Gardens and even the Aegean Sea on a clear day.
The Ancient Agora
Another must-see attraction in Athens is the Ancient Agora, which was the political, social and commercial centre of ancient Athens. Here you can walk among the ruins of temples, stoas, altars and statues that date back to the 6th century BC. You can also visit the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos, which houses the Museum of the Ancient Agora. The museum exhibits various objects and artefacts that illustrate the daily life and activities of ancient Athenians.
The Panathenaic Stadium
If you're a sports fan, you'll love visiting the Panathenaic Stadium, which is the only stadium in the world made entirely of marble. It was built in 329 BC for hosting athletic competitions during the Panathenaic Games, which were held in honour of Athena. The stadium was also used for hosting gladiator fights during Roman times and for staging musical and theatrical events during Byzantine times. In modern times, it hosted the first Olympic Games in 1896 and was used for several ceremonies and events during subsequent Olympics. You can explore the stadium's interior and exterior, as well as its museum that displays memorabilia and posters from past Olympic Games.
Anafiotika
If you want to experience a different side of Athens, head to Anafiotika, a charming neighbourhood that resembles a Cycladic island village. Anafiotika was built in the 19th century by workers from Anafi island who came to Athens to construct King Otto's palace. They built their houses in their traditional style, with whitewashed walls, blue doors and windows, and colourful flowers. Anafiotika is located on the northern slopes of the Acropolis hill, near Plaka. You can wander around its narrow alleys and admire its quaint architecture and atmosphere.
