The introduction of The Aliens Act 1705 during the reign of Queen Anne, the last of the Stewart Monarchs meant that it was the last of the Stewart kings of Scotland. When people ask the question: Should Scotland be an independent county, the Aliens act was the undoubted turning point at the start of the 18th century, and should be the toutchstone at the start of the 20th century
