In Greek mythology, the Chimera is a monstrous creature typically described as having the body of a lion, the head of a goat rising from its back, and a tail that ends in a serpent's head. It is often depicted as breathing fire. The Chimera is said to have been born from the union of Typhon and Echidna, both monstrous beings themselves.
The Chimera was known for terrorizing the region of Lycia in ancient Anatolia, causing destruction wherever it went. It was eventually slain by the hero Bellerophon, who rode the winged horse Pegasus. Using his spear and aided by Pegasus' flight, Bellerophon managed to drive his weapon into the Chimera's throat, killing it.
The Chimera has become a symbol of various things over time, including an emblem of fire and of the volcanic landscape due to its association with flames. Additionally, the term "chimera" is now used metaphorically to describe any creature or idea composed of disparate parts, or something fanciful or illusory.
