The Zugspitze, at 2,962 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains as well as the highest mountain in Germany. It lies south of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the Austria–Germany border runs over its western summit.
So that is what it feels like to have Germany at your feet: At precisely 2,962 metres above sea level, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in the country and home to three glaciers and Germany's highest ski resort.
s Zugspitze worth the money? On a clear day: Absolutely! The Wank offers nice views of Karwendel, Wetterstein and the Zugspitz massif, but you don't see 400 peaks like you do from almost 3.000 meters up.
If you are in Munich, go online and book your DB train from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkircehn Hbh. Then, before you board the Zugspitzbahn in Garmisch, you can purchase a Zugspitze Ticket, which will get you up the mountain once and back down using either the cable or train.
Restaurants, shops, and telescopes await you at the summit. Up top are two separate terraces — Bavarian and Tirolian — connected by a narrow walk which was the border station. Crossing used to be a big deal — you'd get your passport stamped at the little blue house and shift your currency from shillings to marks.
