How to safely serve blueberry for babies
6 – 8 months
Since blueberries are small and round they can pose a choking hazard (CDC) if given whole.1
But as they are soft, you can simply squish them with your fingers, just so they are no longer round (as pictured).
Until your baby has developed the pincer grasp, blueberries may be hard to pick up and hold on to. So, initially, it’s best to add them to recipes like pancakes.
6 – 8 months - Offering with a spoon:
If you choose not to start with finger foods, you can finely chop the blueberries and load them on a spoon.
If possible, around 7-8 months transition to offering squished or halved berries, as shown in the first image.
9 months +
This is the ideal moment to offer blueberries. You can simply squish them with your fingers, or cut them in half or in quarters, just so they are no longer round - but this can be unnecessary work, it’s so much easier just to squish them.
Once your baby has developed the pincer grasp it’s much easier to pick up little berries.
If your baby already knows how to chew (usually around 9 months), blueberries can be offered whole with no special preparation.
