It’s a cyclical game of cat and mouse – cheaters strike with a scheme or device, casinos counter with new security measures, cheaters adjust and strike again. In this episode of Cheating Vegas, meet the “game changers,” cheats devoted to the art of the scam – and the investigators equally committed to tracking them down. While security cameras and technology thwart most illegal endeavors, there’s always a handful of cheats who find a way to beat the system. One is Tommy Carmichael – a former TV repairman blessed with an abundance of electronics know-how. For a time, Carmichael uses his arsenal of homemade slot-cheating devices to turn Vegas into his personal ATM. Later he teams up with fellow cheater, Michael Balsamo, and uses the Carmichael-designed “Light Wand” to drain even more slot machines. While some cheaters employ unique devices, Los Angeles-based gang members stick to old-fashioned methods and brazenly rob casinos at gunpoint. The robberies reveal a casino weakness – lax security in the cage areas, and become a game-changing moment, that permanently impact the design of casino cages in the future.
