Make this delicious South African Beef and beer stew (poitjie) recipe today.
This incredibly delicious Beef Stew made in Beer is a South African favorite. I usually make it in a cast iron pot over the coals but for the sake of our overseas viewers living in colder climates, I decided to do it in a conventional cast iron pot on the stove. You are welcome to play around with the quantities to get the exact taste you desire. Depending on how thick you coat the beef with the cake flour and Paprika, you may need to add more moisture during the cooking process. I usually use more beef stock if this becomes necessary, but on occasion I have also added more beer and the result was great. In this video I decided to serve it on rice, but it tastes just as good on mashed potatoes. Give it a try and let me know how it goes in the comments!
INGREDIENTS
Cake flour (30ml)
Mixed herbs (5ml)
Paprika (5ml)
Beer (375ml)
Beef fillet (1kg)
Beef stock (250ml)
Olive oil (50ml)
Tomato soup powder (1pkt)
Tomato puree (10ml)
Onions (2 medium)
White vinegar (15ml)
Sugar (15ml)
Corn flour (10ml)
Green beans (10)
Carrots (4)
Crushed garlic (5ml)
Bay leaf (1)
Salt (5ml)
Black pepper (2.5ml)
METHOD
Cut the beef into cubes
Slice the carrots and green beans
Mix the cake flour and paprika in a bowl
Mix the tomato puree, vinegar and corn flour in a bowl
Mix one cube of beef stock in 250ml of hot water
Heat the olive oil
Add the beef and brown
remove the beef into a separate bowl
Add the onions and sugar. Cook until soft and slightly brown
Add the beans, carrots and garlic, cover with the lid and allow to simmer for five minutes
Replace the beef and stir in the herbs, barbeque spice, beef stock, beer, tomato soup powder and bay leaf
Cover the lid and allow the pot to simmer for another hour (stirring occasionally)
Add the tomato puree, vinegar and corn flour paste
Cook until gravy is thick
Season with salt and pepper
