LEAD IN
The ancient custom of burning a boat in honour of St Nicholas the Traveller still happens to this day in Croatia.
This year too, on December 6, the inhabitants and numerous guests gathered around a ritual fire in front of the church of St Nicholas, the patron saint of the fishing village of Komiza.
STORYLINE
Komiza is located in a deep bay on the west side of Croatia's island of Vis.
The waves and a lack of fertile land have created a community reliant on fishing and the fruits of the sea for its survival.
Fishing first developed here as an industry under the Venetian reign, making Komiza an important trader in seafood in the Adriatic.
Venetian authorities recorded in the 16th century that the fishermen of Komiza caught three million tons of sardines in just one day.
Komiza resident, Marija Greget, says her father was a fisherman who sailed all over the world.
