Varieties of Alexandrite by GIA. Both natural alexandrite, and alexandrite gemstone are considered varieties of alexandrite. Often described by gem aficionados as “emerald by day, ruby by night,” alexandrite is the very rare color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. A valuable alexandrite gem displays a strong reddish or purplish color under incandescent light, and a bluish or greenish color change occurs in daylight or sunlight. In addition to displaying its color-changing phenomena alexandrite can also, in very rare cases, show needle-like inclusions that create a cat’s-eye effect. High-quality alexandrite is rare and difficult to find, resulting in its higher value. Alexandrite is also the June birthstone, along with pearl and moonstone.
