Twenty-three-year-old McKinley Louisma faces charges of murder and kidnapping for the alleged killing of Melody Hoffman February 17, 2024. Authorities report that Louisma and Hoffman were in a romantic relationship before Louisma and Dakota Van Patten, a friend, allegedly collaborated to fatally assault Hoffman. The victim was reportedly placed in a car trunk and later disposed of in a nearby lake. If convicted, Louisma could receive a life sentence.
Court documents say Louisma and Hoffman had been in a relationship at the time, but that Louisma was also seeing another woman.
Hoffman's body was found at Amana Lily Lake in Iowa County on February 18th, but investigators believe she was killed the night before.
Investigators believe Louisma and another man, Dakota Van Patten, kidnapped Hoffman and killed her at Morgan Creek Park in Cedar Rapids.
Evidence collected from Louisma’s car included Hoffman’s clothing, a phone case, and a bloody watch band.
Investigators also confirmed through video surveillance that Louisma, Van Patten and Logan William Michael Kimpton, 18, who also has been charged, were together at the Southwest Cedar Rapids Walmart buying the two machetes and gloves before they picked up Hoffman that night.
A criminal complaint shows Louisma told investigators that he and Van Patten put Hoffman in the trunk of a car at Morgan Creek Park in northwest Cedar Rapids Saturday night, then dumped her body at Amana Lily Lake, about 16 miles away.
A search warrant was executed at Van Patten's home where Hoffman's glasses were found along with towing rope believed to be used to kill her.
Van Patten's trial is scheduled for March 3, 2025.
A third man, Logan Kimpton, is accused of helping purchase knives and gloves on the night of the murder but allegedly backed out of the killing. Prosecutors say he had bragged to others about a plan to kill someone but told investigators he “chickened out” of taking part in the murder. Kimpton’s trial is set for December 10, 2024.
Earlier this month, Louisma's defense filed documents suggesting Hoffman might have been pregnant at the time of her death on February 18, 2024.
