Have you ever found a switch in your house that does not turn any lights on or off? Do you have an electrical switch and have no idea what it controls? This video explains why you may have a receptacle switch that seems to control nothing.
Part of the explanation may involve a 3 way receptacle switch. If this is the case you may have more then one switch that turns nothing on or off. In this video I describe how a three way switch works using two separate wall light switches.
In most cases I have found that when an electrical switch doesn't turn anything on or off it is because it is simply not connected. In the video I use a modern fan as an example. A fan with lights needs a power wire for lights and a power wire for the fan. Houses are often wired with two separate switched power wires at the fan mounting box. However many fans with lights today only need one power connection and are controlled by a wireless control. This means there is an extra wire in the fan box that is never connected and this is the wire that is connected to the 3-way receptacle switches that turn nothing on or off.
