STORYLINE:
Portugal faced hot weather on Wednesday as the country braced itself for a heatwave.
Temperatures in the capital Lisbon were due to exceed 40 degrees in the coming days.
The heatwave is expected to last nine or even ten days.
Extreme hot weather officially becomes a heatwave after six days of consecutive above average temperatures.
The country will be experiencing what is referred to as "tropical nights" with a minimum of 20 degrees Celsius.
The Atlantic Ocean breeze will be of no respite as it will be close to non-existent.
The risk of wildfires in the country is also higher during this period due to low humidity levels.
