When you go to New York, diving into its diverse food culture is a must. Pretty much the entire world is at your fingertips there! And as someone who loves Mediterranean cuisine, I had to go out and get a taste of the incredible Greek food scene in Astoria, Queens in NYC!
Joining me on my adventure is my Greek brother Tasos. We had a lot of food to eat and I’d need some help with it!

Astoria is the largest Greek community in New York City and it really feels like a piece of Greece in the middle of the city! The people there speak Greek. In fact, when you visit, you may not hear many people speaking English at all!
We started at Taverna Kyclades, which are named after a group of Greek islands. There, we’d eat lots of seafood. The restaurant immediately reminded me of my time in Santorini. There was so much seafood cooking in the kitchen, from clams to shrimp to fish.
They even removed the bones from the fish! They also made spanakopita, octopus, fried calamari, stuffed fish filets, swordfish kebabs, and some hard Greek bread.
At our table, we started with some ouzo. I loved the anise flavor! Then, we jumped on the grilled octopus, stuffed clams, red snapper, fried calamari, and Greek salad. First was the snapper, which we added lemon to.
It was light, oily, fresh, and citrusy, and melted in my mouth! We both felt like we were back in Greece! Next was my favorite, the octopus! It was full of oregano and had an amazing meaty texture. The stuffed clams were briny and stuffed with bread and so flavorful!
I loved the block of feta in the Greek salad, the crunchiness of the fired calamari, and the sweetness of the sweet potato. Everything was so fresh! Then, we finished with some galaktoboureko, which is a custard dessert with cinnamon and a flaky crust, and some perfectly balanced baklava!
Next, we walked through the neighborhood, past townhouses and brownstones got some freddo espresso (Greek coffee) at a convenience store. Greece has a huge coffee culture. It was so strong and frothy!
Then, we stopped at Titan Foods, which is a Greek market, where we saw spanakopita, phyllo dough, authentic Greek yogurt and beers, feta, tzatziki, fresh herbs, sweets, dolmas, chocolate, and more. At the counter in the back, they let me try some amazing feta from Arahova. It was crumbly and a little salty!
After that, we walked to King Souvlaki, a food truck where they serve traditional souvlaki! In their kitchen, they made me a gyro with pita, French fries, feta, pork, and a Greek salad! It had been a while since we’d both had one.
I loved the creamy sauce and the crispy French fries in it. It’s not Greek without the fries! The fresh pork, lamb, and Greek salad next to them were heavenly! The creamy cheese I couldn’t get enough of them. Then, we finished up with some Loux, which is a Greek fruit juice!
For our final place, we headed to Bahari Estiatorio, where we got a Greek salad and bouyiourdi, a dish that contains feta, tomatoes, and peppers with oregano. It’s cooked on a skillet. We also had gigantes beans, lamb chops, and pastitsio.
The lamb chops were so juicy and tender, and the gigantes beans were melt-in-your-mouth delicious! They were like big fava beans. The pastitsio contained penne pasta and meat and is similar to lasagna. The thin penne pasta was the best!
What an amazing Greek food tour in Astoria, Queens in NYC!
