This is one of two engines that I received from a friend in our club to restore. It is an old Saito FA56 that was in storage for a long time and was rusted up inside. The engine was turning but the valves were stuck. With some treatment and patients, everything came apart without any damage.
After cleanup and assembly with new bearings, it had almost no compression. Both valves were closing properly with adequate valve lash gaps but were leaking badly. Alter lapping the valves a few times, they were sealing properly again. I also honed the sleeve a bit to remove light scratches and made new gaskets. The connecting rod, piston, and ring were still in good shape.
I ran the engine as if new and it ended up running very well.
This engine will run fine again in your Cub Ben. Enjoy.
