Visitors to the Apollo Theatre described a rumbling noise and moments later seeing the ceiling collapse on top of theatregoers shortly after 8pm. An unmamed American man in the audience described the collapse as being "like a landslide."
"Members of the audience in the theatre's upper circle, circle and stalls have been affected by the structural collapse," said London Fire Brigade deputy assistant commissioner Graham Ellis.
The interior of the building, on Shaftesbury Avenue in the West End of London, was left covered in dust, plaster and pieces of wood.
It is believed all of those trapped are have now been freed and are receiving treatment for their injuries. The London Ambulance service said that 81 people were walking wounded and with seven suffering more serious injuries.
