Historically, VCP was likely home to numerous species of salamander including the Northern Dusky salamander (Desmognathus fuscus) and the Northern two-lined salamander (Eurycea bislineata), however only the Eastern red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) can be readily observed to date. P. cinerues do not require an aquatic life stage, which means it can reproduce despite pollution to our parks smaller freshwater ecosystems such as the higher smaller streams, springs, seeps and vernal pools. These redbacks were found underneath a rotting log, an important component of their habitat.
