Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia have announced talks over filling the Grand Renaissance Dam along the Blue Nile in Ethiopia are going well. Previously disagreements over the dam were a source of tensions, as the Blue Nile in Ethiopia feeds around 85 percent of the water in the River Nile that passes through Egypt and Sudan.
But Egypt is a country of almost 100 million people, over 90 percent of whom live along the banks of the Nile. Around 60 percent of those people are under the age of 29, and with soaring unemployment and poverty already pushing the country on the brink of imploding, decreased waterflow in the Nile only threatens increased desertification in Egypt's agricultural plains in the highly populated Nile Delta. This would disrupt the economy even further.
Radio EastMed's Editor-in-Chief Ertan Karpazli addresses some of these issues.
